A £7.5m affordable eco–housing development in SA1 has received planning consent from Swansea Council.
Plot D5A, designed by Holder Mathias Architects for the Coastal Housing Group, looks set to be one of the most high–spec housing developments of its kind in Wales.
The five-floor building will feature 69 spacious apartments with balconies and occupy a prime site overlooking The Prince of Wales Dock. It comes soon after completion of the Mariners Court development from Coastal Housing, also designed by Holder Mathias.
The scheme has been part funded by the Welsh Assembly Government as well as Coastal Housing, and the site was purchased from WAG in 2008.
It is the third housing scheme the architects’ firm has designed for Coastal Housing Group.
Terry Morley, Director at Holder Mathias, said: “I can’t think of any similar developments in Wales which have the benefit of a dockside location like this, and we have sought to ensure that the design makes full advantage of its location and aspect.
The development has also been designed with the environment firmly in mind, and will meet the Code for Sustainable Homes’ 4* rating. The development will feature a ‘brown’ roof planted with local fauna and CO² emissions will be reduced by 44% thanks to energy saving technology in heating, lighting and hot water. The timber framing will also come from sustainable sources.
