The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has appointed Peter Mathias to its Board of Trustees.

Mathias, of international firm Holder Mathias, has been made one of the RIBA´s thirteen trustees, who have responsibility for overseeing the fiduciary duties, finances and business direction of the RIBA and its subsidiary companies, including RIBA Trust, RIBA Enterprises and RIBA Professional Services.

The RIBA is the UK body for architecture and the architectural profession. It has 40,500 members worldwide and provides training, technical services, education and representation of the profession in the UK and internationally. Its Stirling Prize is one of the foremost prizes in architecture.

Mathias will sit on the board alongside high–profile industry names such as current RIBA President Ruth Reed and former President and founding partner of Penoyre & Prasad Sunand Prasad.

Peter Mathias says: “Being appointed to this position is a real honour for me, as it comes from my peers in the industry. Holder Mathias has been built on a strong business foundation, coupled with a desire to see good design flourish. It is this combination of business thinking, combined with creative flair, which I hope to bring to the role of trustee.

“I have also sat on the boards of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and the Welsh National Opera, advising on their operational and strategic direction, as well as on the RIBA Council, and I hope this experience will serve me well in my new role.”

Since becoming a member of the RIBA in 1968, Mathias has served in a number of different roles within the organisation, including as a member of the RIBA Council from 1981–1987, chairman of its Sound Practice Steering Group from 1982–1985, and as a member of its Practice Committee and Finance Committee.

Mathias will take up his role from April 2010, for a period of two years.
