The Barnsley Markets project is one that Holder Mathias, with Piers Gough of CZWG as a partner, won in competition. The project is one of the first elements of the now famous masterplan for the town that was drawn up by Will Alsop.

The proposition is for a three layer market. The replacement market and extended shopping and car park have been integrated, linking at various levels, existing streets and buildings. Ease of movement between parts and permeability of the whole still allows different atmospheres to pervade distinctive parts of the development.

The market is a great draw and is the heart of the town and will become even more central, more accessible and more full of character. The intensity of the casbah will contrast with a big open airy market place.
